But i don't know how to go about it.
The key I'm having is of Vista.  So I thought of changing the key so I followed the steps in following KB - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874
But when I'm entering the it says incorrect key.

Can anybody help me in activating my XP.

  • Hi,
To downgrade from Windows Vista to XP Pro you need to have the following,

    1) you should be using a Windows Vista business or ultimate
    2) you have to have a Windows XP Pro (genuine) media and a product key (this can be a used license)

on your windows vista youwill have to do a clean installation with Windows XP (you have to have the media and Product key). If teh XP license is being used before then you wont be able to activate your licenses. if thats the case then yo can call the Microsoft Activation help desk (mostly you will have a toll free number depending on the region you live) and tell them that you are in the midst of a downgrade from Vista to XP and they might require your Vista product key as well as XP product key and teh installaation id of your computer. when you provide those details in return they will give you the confirmation ID which will help you to activate your PC.

if yo cant find your XP product key, it will be printed on the COA (certificate of authenticity) which is a sticker pasted on top of your sustem unit or on the underneath cover of your notebook. If you dont have teh COA then you will have to use some 3rd party tools in order to retrieve your product key. I have used a product named AIDA32 which you can download form the following location

hope the above information is suffcient for you!

  • Albela,

You must enter a valid Windows XP key. A Windows Vista key will not work for you to activate Windows XP.

This forum is for discussing Enterprise issues. If you have downgrade rights, you should contact Microsoft Support or post your question in the Windows Genuine forum.

  • Hi Akfash,

That was very helpful.  One last question - you said "youwill have to do a clean installation with Windows XP".
Here I don't want Vista on my desktop, I'm planning to uninstall Vista and will just have XP.  Can that be done with downgrade rights?

  • Hi,
What i meant by " you will have to do a clean installation with Windows XP" is that you will have to format your computer adn remove Windows Vista and then you will have to install Windows XP :)

make sure you backup all your data using Windows Easy Transfer before you format.

Hope the above information is helpful to you.

  • Hello Albela,
Going back to your first post, you indicate that you Windows XP already installed and you want to change the product key.
You bought a new product key and you want to use that key.
Is that the scenario that you are asking about?

With Windows XP, the media you are using or used to install Windows XP has to match the product key you are trying to use so it's important to know what type of media was used to install Windows XP previously.
on the properties of my computer there is a long number in this format
    xxxxx-yyy-xxxxxxx-xxxxx
What digits are on your installation where the yyy is above?
