Windows Update deletes custom registry settings RRS feed

  • Question

  • I use the Windows LPD service for printing from Linux/Unix.

For the printing to work correctly I created a DWord Value 'SimulatePassThrough=1' under the LPDSVC Parameters key in the registry.

After each Windows Update the DWord Value gets removed by the update.

    This is totally frustrating!!!!!!!!

I maintain 80+ PC's which provide a LPD Service to the local Point of Sale printer.

How can I prevent Windows Update from deleting my custom registry entries?

  • Hi,

I fully understand the inconvenience you have encountered.

Official websites provide the AppIDs are mapped to executables and classes using two different mechanisms.

But I'm afraid it's hard to find the reason why the registry keys deleted. This update is more like reinstalling system files. So the custom registry could be deleted after upgrade. Or I suppose that if it is a compatibility issue after install Windows 1803.

Usually the registry has a problem, all we can do is back up the registry before the issue occurs.

We don't know the specific mechanism of Windows upgrade. I consider that you could get some help from Windows Development forum.

    Best regards,
