Cannot start microsoft outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just ran the most recent update for office 2016 and received the following message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook window.  The set of files cannot be opened.  The file c:\Users\xxx\xxx\xxx\Microsoft\Outlook\xxxx@***.ost cannot be opened.

Are there any sugestions as to how to recover outlook.  Everything was running fine until the update started.

  • Hi Charlie,

Does the issue persist after rebooting Windows?

Please close Outlook, then try running Outlook in safe mode with the steps below:

    1. Press Win + R, type:
        outlook /safe
Note: there is a space before "/"

    2. Press Enter.

If it works in safe mode, please exist Outlook and then restart Outlook in normal mode to check the result.

If it doesn't help, please navigate to the location below in File explorer:

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Find and delete the OST file mentioned in the error message and then restart Outlook to check the result. This will automatically recreate the OST file related to the account.

In case the above all fails, you may recreate a new Outlook profile, configure Outlook to prompt you to choose a profile when started and see if the issue can be resolved. See the instructions in the corresponding sections of this article.

Hope the above can be helpful.

    Regards,

    Yuki Sun

  • Thank you very much for a prompt response.  The problem seemed to have disappeared once I rebooted the computer.  I saved all of your comments for possible recovery the next time this occurs.
