Hyper-v DVD problem. Physical DVD greyed out. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello All,
I'm cannot access the DVD drive from my VM and note the following:

    - My server is loaded with the free Hyper-V R2 SP1 only (Not Windows 2008 R2)
    - I am using a Vista machine with Hyper-V Manager to configure the VM
    - The VM creates and starts - no problem
    - There is only 1 VM on this host

    - I have tried an IDE and SATA DVD - both have the same problem.

    - I have deleted and created the VM several times

    - When I look at the VM settings -> IDE Controller 0 -> DVD Drive Physical CD/DVD drive is grey with no drive letter showing, but I can select "Image file" and browse the CD. This means that the physical drive is connected and functioning.

    - I want to install SBS 2003 which has many CD's so an .iso really isn't an option.

    - There is no option within the VM to select the virtual DVD - The Media Menu just says "Drives Not Loaded"

    - I have tried connecting to the VM as administrator as well as the user I created (tbsadmin) but there is no difference

I have read through the following forum posts but still cannot resolve my issue.

    Hope you can help, thanks.

  • I'm not sure this is possible to do.  The Hyper-V machine has no access to the physical drive on the remote computer.

A better solution is to use ISOs from a network share.
