Can you create a forward for the old address until the search engines catch up?
Changing the domain is relatively quick (max 48 hours), but it will take longer for the search engines to find your new site and even longer to rank it above your old site.
The best thing is to forward your old URL to the new one. And to get your new URLs high in the ranking, try to get as many incoming links as possible pointing to the new ones
