Change URL of discussion board item RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hallo,

does someone know how to change the url of a discussion board entry?
The problem is that some of our discussions contains an dot (.) in the subject (and therby in the url) with the result that the crawler ignores them.

    Thank you for any help,

    Ja-Go

  • Hello Ja-Go,

For research I used a standard team discussion and created a discussion item with the subject 123.com for testing.  Navigating to the discussion (not searching), right clicking on the subject of the item and selecting Copy shortcut results in a URL of:

    http://site/Lists/General%20Discussion/Flat.aspx?RootFolder=&2fLists%2fGeneral%20Discussion%2f123%2ecom%209832&FolderCTID=0x01200200FCBB8ED6C4ED94E8F7B1A39F86F0EDF
Working through that URL I see the URL referencing the item 123.com as 123%2ecom and not using a period.
Performing a search for 123 I find the item 123.com and its URL as: http://site/Lists/General%20Discussion/123.com%209832
That URL does use a period for 123.com item.

Since the above is standard out of the box and it works fine for testing I was wondering if you are using something custom in SharePoint such as a template for discussions or possibly something for crawling and indexing the server.  Any and all information you provide me will help us in the future for working this out. Also, would you please include a URL for a discussion item that you can navigate to in this thread along with any other information?

Please remember to click 'Mark as Answer' on the post that helps you or click 'Unmark as Answer' if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Hello Nishant Shah,

    thank you for your answer.

No, we don't use any special templates for discussions and I have seen the problem also with folders in libraries.
Only we have a German installation of SharePoint.

If I select the discussion the URL is similar to yours. But in the crawl protocol there is a warning and this shows the period in the URL. For example:

    http://servername/068/lists/teamdiskussion/zaland.de
Der Inhalt für diese URL wird wegen eines Nichtindexattributs vom Server ausgeschlossen.
(Content for this URL is excluded by the server because a no-index attribute)

    Thank you for your help,
    Ja-Go

  • Thank you for that hint. It will take a few days to get this hotfix installed in our environment. But I think this is the solution to my problem.
