Vista Login Problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • Has anyone had the following problem?

I started my Vista Ultimate x86 laptop this morning and when it got to the login screen, there was no user to choose from. I could not login. I used ctrl-alt-del, and every other groupng of keys I could think of, but no joy.

I installed the Vista DVD and tried to repair, but it found no problems. I did a restore, but the same problem.

I booted into SAFE mode and was able to log in. I created a new user, just to see if my profile was hosed, but the new user did not show up either.

Luckily I create an image every Friday of my boot drive, so re-imaging was no problem and I'm up and running.

The only thing I did new was install the Catalyst 8.1 drivers for the graphics card, but i did that on Wed. of last week and have run the laptop everyday since, without error. In fact I just looked at my reliability score yesterday, and was at 9.74. That was probably what caused this problem<grin>.

I do have the Novell Client installed, but I've had that since August/September 2007.

I searched for these symptoms on-line and have found no one else with this problem.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,
As my understanding, re-image the system then you can login Windows Vista, is that right?
After the driver for graphic card being installed, you cannot see the account when you login Windows Vista?
Please follow the below steps to check some related infromation:
    1.Please tyep"regedit" from a command prompt.
    2. Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
    3. Right click on "ProfileList" and "Export".
    4. Save the file as "txt". (Do not select save type as"reg".)
    5. Check the txt file to see whether Data of profileimagepath . And be sure that the account you used is list there.
    (Click "Edit"-"Find"-type"profileimagepath")
2.Please check whether NTFS folder containing user’s profile is deleted .Location is: C:\Users

    3. When user is logged off last time, some handles that are attached to the profile
    are not released successfully.
If all the information is correct, then please do a full backup of your system and then update the driver of graphic card to see whether the problem can be re-produced.
    Hope it helps.
