Feature deployment in specific web applications RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've seen a couple of threads in this forum already (http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/344ca69c-cfc4-4770-a57c-1fc6e8356abb & http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/d231eec2-9df0-4264-bc4c-5f99e69d3b42/) that seem to confirm that despite best efforts to build a feature with site collection scope and when using "Solution Deployment" only deploy it to a specific web application that the feature is shown to all site collections in all web applications.

If anyone knows of a way to limit the visibility of features to specific web applications (when the feature is deploying content types and publishing layouts) then please let me know!

Conversely, if anyone can explain why this behaviour is being exhibited then that would be of equal value.  Furthermore, what then is the value of using the "Deploy To" component if it doesn't "do what it says on the tin"?

Surely, in environments where there are multiple web applications for different departments or business units, without having the ability to limit the visibility of features doesn't the list of site collection/web features become overwhelming and ulitimately unusable?
