Clone SharePoint and Project Server in the same farm but under another web application RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings friends recently I got this requeriment

    We got the following scenario:

    - 1 sql server 2012 R2
    - 1 app server SHAREPOINT SERVER ENTERPRISE 2013 AND PROJECT SERVER 2013

-- company intranet and project server production environment:

    web application http://servername:81/
    sites http://servername:81/ http://servername:81/pwa/

    Content databases:

    Intranet SharePoint: Wss_content
    Project server: ProjectWebApp
    Project Server Content: Wss_Content_PWA

Now we want to clone SharePoint and Project Server to another webapplication (port 84) to have a test environment

-- company intranet and project server test environment:

    web application http://servername:84/
    sites http://servername:84/ http://servername:84/pwa/

I’ve already try backup databases dismount and mount method but got the error of duplicate database Id in the WSS_Content databases (ProjectWebApp works but not the others) also got the orphans if I assign new Id parameter.

What Can I do to copy or clone everything well, sharepoint and project server 2013

    thanks

  • You are on the right track.  It requires using PowerShell to create the Web Application and linking the database.   I believe there is an option to create a new ID.  If it isnt in PowerShell, then it is an STSADM command to do this.

  • Hello,

There is a PowerShell parameter in the Mount-SPContentDatabase command to assign a new database ID - although I have never tried that. If a clone is required, the easiest approach is using DB backups to a different farm. From memory it isn't just the duplicate database ID that causes issues, I think it is also the duplicate site collection IDs.

  • Thanks for your answer Paul.

I did the Mount-SPContentDatabase with the -assigNewDatabaseID parameter but got the site collection orphans, like you said I got the duplicate sitecollection IDs.

So the only way is to clone in another farm right? there is no way to clone in the same farm but with a different web application. I need a confirmation.

Once again, thanks for your answer

  • Thanks for your answer Michael.

I did found the command, is the Mount-SPContentDatabase with the -assigNewDatabaseID parameter but got Site collection orphans the database id change but the sitecollection IDs remain the same so Central Administration only shows the original sitecollection the clone ones are missing.

  • We usually clone into a new farm - that just works providing that content database doesnt already exist on the new / other farm.
