Both Virtual Servers say to "Activate Windows" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Server 2016 Standard and have set 2 Virtual Servers using Hyper-V

all working fine and had no issues but when I logged on to them today to change some setting i had the message,

"Activate Windows Go to Settings to activate Windows" at the bottom right of the screen.

When i do this there is a message in Red saying

We can't activate windows on this device. If windows was preinstalled on this device, you need to contact the device manufacturer to activate it, or got to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error Code: 0xC004F07C

Any help on this would be appreciated

  • VMs need to be activated the same way a physical install of Windows is.

Have you put in your serial number and tried activating?

  • Yes I've tried doing the activation through the settings page also tried over the phone but the code that is generated isn't recognised,

I'm wondering, as Dell done the original setup of the bare metal and the original VM's (I had to delete the original VM's)

So maybe the licenses got deleted somehow.

  • Well, it could be because it's an OEM license and the VMs don't like that serial number. Have you contacted Dell support?
