Launch .exe file from link on web page? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In our organization, we have a group in IT that want to have links on their department's home page that would provide easy access to the numberous windows apps that they frequently run.  Is this possible?  Security-wise, it doesn't seem like a browser would allow the launch of an .ext file without setting browser security settings to be so low as to be dangerous.  Can anyone advise please?

  • I've tried that.  It didn't work for me.  AFter some research I made this new post about whether .hta files can be rendered in a Page Viewer Web Part.

Can .hta files be viewed in a Page Viewer Web Part?

  • Where are the exe files stored... on a server somewhere?  If so all you do is put a link (you can use the left navigation / quick launch, or even a links list):

    file:///\\server\folder1\subfolder2\applicationFolder\application.exe

  • There are security concerns but you can use WebRun to run exe files from html links. We use the pro version which also has a whitelist feature.
