  • I'm trying to run disc fragmenter on my computer, it says it can't do that, say that chkdsk/f. is trying to run.  What is that?  How do I get rid of that, and defragment this disc?   thanks....

  • Hi,

    It looks like your computer had issues with either a start up or an improper shutdown at some point which logged a chkdsk query.

    As disk defrag oranizes your hard drive sectors, it will not rung against chkdsk as there may be a corruption on there which defrag could upset.

    To Resolve:

    * Launch the command prompt (Start > Run > CMD)

    * Type in chkdsk c: /f /r

    * This will run the chkdsk utility which is basically forcing a corruption check (/f) on the NTFS (Windows) file system and repair any corruptions (/r)

    * This process can take time to run so be patient and avoid using the pc for anything else - If its a laptop, ensure its plugged in instead of using battery

    * Once complete, reboot the PC and defrag should perform as per usual.

    Kind Regards,
