SCCM 2012 Backup (VSS) on ESXi host

We are running SCCM 2012 on a ESXi virtual machine. When we go to exectue a backup we have issues with VSS:

Error: VSS_E_WRITERERROR_TIMEOUT. Error Code = 0x80,042,3f2.

In addition we get the following errors:

Error: Sql Server could not prepare for the Backup. (SQL database is located on an external box)

Please let me know if anyone has experienced this.

The host should make no difference.

Have you reviewed the backup log files (Smsbkup.log, smssqlbkup.log, and Smswriter.log)?
