Cannot delete tasks in MS project 2003 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tasks in my project that I no longer want for various reasons.  If I highlight the line then right click and select delete, nothing happens.  I tried setting calculation to automatic, removing all dependencies and removing the resource assignments, but it is still "permanent."  There are no error messages or other indications of a problem.  I also opened the task window to look for odd settings, but nothing.  Other lines can be deleted without any problem.

I had a similar experience with my resources.  One name was double entered and I could not remove either entry?

I also have an issue with "outdenting" tasks in the same project.  If I go to an indented task and then click the left arrow (Outdent) all my dates change, but the task does not move "out" or up to the next level in the organization.  The re-calcualtion of dates occurs no matter if the recalculation option is set to manual or automatic.

My MS project is 2003 and is either the most confusing or bug filled of all Office products??

    Thanks

  • Rob,

Actually I believe Project 2000 was their "best effort" but 2003 did add some nice new features. Later versions have more whiz-bang but also seems to have more issues, although those are pretty much resolved now. At least that's my maybe not so humble opinion.

It sounds like your file is corrupt. Try this. Go the the MVP website at, http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm, and take a look at FAQ 43 - Handling project file corruption and/or bloat. Use one or more of the methods described therein. If that resolves your problem, great, if not, let us know what happened.

While you're at it, make sure you have the latest service pack installed for Project 2003 (SP3). You can download it at, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873459
