Windows NTP server does not appear to be working RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

Not sure if I am on the correct forum category, but I currently have the following problem.

I have a server running Windows server 2008R2 which I have configured to be an NTP server, amongst other things. I have followed the correct set-up process so far as adding the service, editing the RegEdit and unblocking the port on the firewall. In addition, I have ensured it is connected to a working NTP DNS itself and a w32syn does re-correct the time.

The problem I have is the server uses multiple IP's (not by my choosing) and I am concerned that the NTP is being broadcast on the incorrect IP.

Is there any way I can configure the service further and specify the IP to be used for sending the NTP to attached devices, as the IP on these machines must be set how they are.Best regards,

    Chris.

  • Hi,

Based on my research and test, we couldn’t specific a special IP address for windows time service. However, using windows firewall or third-part firewall to block UDP port 123 for special IP address may be helpful for your needs

More information, we could follow the article below:

Windows Time Service Tools and Settings

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/get-started/windows-time-service/windows-time-service-tools-and-settings

    Note

If you have a computer with multiple network adapters (also called a multihomed computer), you cannot selectively enable the Windows Time service based on the network adapter.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please feel free to post in the forum.

    Best Regards,

    William

  • Hi William,

Thank you for your reply and pardon the lack of response, I only work Mon-Fri 9-5 GMT. Unfortunately, I have already allowed port 123 UDP through the firewall (inbound and outbound.) Its very odd!

To give you some background, I work within the digital cinema industry, and this is the first time we have encountered this issue, even with multiple IP's involved, so I was wondering if there is anything else that could have caused the issue. The projectors themselves use a niche version of Linux (locked down to prevent any copyright infringement) and use the NTP to ensure scheduled show times play at the correct time.

I guess the next step is to re-create the LAG and specify IP's again to see if we have missed any steps.

    Thanks once again.

    Best regards,

    Chris.
