Hard Drive Size RRS feed

  • Question

  • I replace my 120GB hard drive to a 300GB hard drive. Could someone explain why my 300GB drive shows up as 279GB. My CMOS reports 300GB, but windows vista doesn't. It shows Capacity 300,067,618,816 bytes  279 GB. Is this normal and there is really 300GB or am I loosing 20GB? Is there away to make it report 300GB?

    Thanks,

    Gregg

  • This is the math that Windows is using:

    300,067,618,816 / 1024 = 293034784

    293034784 / 1024 = 286166

    286166 / 1024 = 279

Your hard drive manufacturer is using this math:

    300,067,618,816 / 1000 = 300067618

    300067618 / 1000 = 300067

    300067 / 1000 = 300

Just a matter of defining a GB as 1000 or 1024 really...
