Perf Metrics: Number of Cores and L3 cache size return 'unknown' for some servers RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I ran an perf inventory on some of our production servers to consider them for virtualization.
In the PerfMetricResults excel workbook, the ProcessorUtilization worksheet contains most servers with "Number of cores" as 'unknown' . For the same servers with missing cores data, "L3 cache size (KB)" is also unknown. All other values for these servers have values.

This doesn't seem to be linked to particular CPU types either:
I see correct number of cores reported for servers with "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           E5335  @ 2.00GHz", and 'unknown' for other servers with this processor type.

Any ideas why this is happening?

  • Number of cores isn't returned by the WMI providers pre-Vista.  So if you're inventorying Win2003, WinXP, etc, the number of cores data won't be returned.

I haven't checked, but I suspect that the same is true for L3 cache, since I don't think L3 cache existed in the Windows XP timeframe (i.e. when Windows XP was originally written in 2001-2002)...
