free/busy info during cross forest migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    We have to move our Exchange to a new forest, mail addreesses will be the same, all is in the same LAN, we tested succesfully mailbox migration and mail flows.

    Old forest ->Exchange 2013

    New forest-> Exchange 2016

    Forest trust in place.

    Now, it seems there are 2 possibilty  about mantain free/busy info:

    -federation trust

    -availability service

    the problem is that i cannot find  a clear processe to execute this options.

    There are articles about federation and availability services, but here, we have to federate only on LAN (not over internet) and using the same domain name.

    Anyone found a goog article about free/busy in cross-forest environmente sharing the same SMTP domain?

    Thanks.

  • What you want is possible but not without separate domain names (even if they're secondary names) for each of the two organizations, and you'll probably need that for proper mail flow anyway.

  • Hi oro_blue,

    while Ed is right, you can still use your users SMTP domain.

    While saying that during migration you must have a source domain and target domain to determine the migrated / non migrated users location. If you query for migration software documentation, there is additional routing domains used like src.dom and dst.dom.

    1. You also must configure an additional email address policy to add the ADDITIONAL src.dom and dst.dom in your source / target domain, i.e. in the source domain all users will have an src.dom while on your target all users will have an additional dst.dom smtp address.
    choose the same domains for the availability as you configure for the mail forwarding during migration (and dont forget to clean them up, when done).

    2. you need to describe users like that:
    a non migrated user has a mailbox in the source forest. to be able to look up that user in the target, create a mail contact and add the src.dom (= user lives in source)
    when migrated, remove the contact from the target (the mailbox will do the rest) and add the contact OR dst.dom mailbox to  in the source (= user lives in target).
    Now you use the add-availabilityspace in source domain to query dst.dom vice versa.

    3. Learn from the big ones, here is your how to :)

    As you have no experience with migration, remember this in case you have IMCEAEX error  on autocompletion addresses: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2807779/imceaex-non-delivery-report-when-you-send-email-messages-to-an-internal-user-in-office-365-dedicated

    Take the Binary Tree document as a guideline/cook book, choose the other links option to get more flexibility.

    Let me know it this helped.

  • Good luck with that.  It isn't what you asked for, but maybe it's what you want.
