DPM 2012 R2 Remote site backups RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently manage 2 different locations that have similar requirements.  Both have have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster running CSV's and about 40 VM's.

Both locations have a local DPM 2012 R2 Server that backs up all VM's to the local DPM server.  These are than offloaded to tape once a week for off-site storage.  I would like to consider changing the process and eliminate the off-site storage by using DPM to to backup to each location.

These locations are already connected via EVPN 100mb + connections and this can be increased if necessary.  Also, The replications would be scheduled during non-work hours.

I am looking for some guidance on different concepts to achieve this.  For example, If the DPM servers at Site A are backing up the local VM's at that site than the Host that host these VM's will be reporting to the local DPM server.  How would Site B also backup these VM's?  Is there some type of multi site configuration to achieve this?

  • As I understand, you can use DPM disaster recovery: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757845.aspx

You can setup it as crossover, i.e. DPM-A in Site A backups all VMs from Hyper-V hosts at Site A, then DPM-B as Site B backups all these VMs from DPM-A. And vice versa. It will work even with only 2 DPM servers.
