Issues with Windows Vista updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is actually in reference to a VMware virtual machine of mine. Every attempt to install updates in Windows Vista fails. The updates "are not being configured correctly." This happens every time, and it is becomingly increasingly irritating. I will try to re-install the operating system, that is, if it will let me do that. What can I do about this in the meantime?

  • The problem with that is I can't get in to my account. Either I forgot my password, or I was entering the correct password, but maybe it wasn't being accepted because a hacker changed the password, and I'm not entirely sure if it will let me re-install the operating system. I've already tried this, but the system continued to boot as if no installation disk image was mounted. ...In case you're wondering about that, I downloaded a copy of x64 Windows Vista from the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance. After many failed download attempts due to a "checking file CRC error," the download finally finished. Perhaps I have a bad installation disk image? I suppose I could try to see if they'll let me re-download a better working copy, which is likely not possible. I actually have an MSDN subscription through the college I attend, but my software choices are limited, and today, I discovered that they took down Windows Vista from the website.

  • I was able to install Vista on the virtual machine, so the image must be bootable.

  • That's the thing-- I think this was happening even after I installed Vista. The only other solution I can think of to resolve this issue is uninstalling Vista by putting another operating system [i.e Ubuntu, ReactOS] in its place, then attempting to re-install Vista, because if I'm not mistaken, overwriting Windows with another operating system or a different version of Windows acts as uninstalling a currently installed version of Windows. Am I correct? I need to know before I attempt this, because I want to avoid improperly licensing Vista when I try to re-install it.

  • Just tried to install Ubuntu on the VM, but it didn't recognize that disk either.

  • My posts disappear and this is driving me crazy.

Please try with a new copy of Windows. Looks like that you have corrupted / missing files.

  • Perhaps doing that will get rid of the error message saying that an unauthorized change was made to Windows. This "change" is preventing me from activating windows and that is driving me ape.

  • I just got off chat with them. It's strange, though-- Windows appears to be activated now...
