Can DPM backup a Hyper-V VM (SQL box) without backing up SQL? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our SQL admin would like our VM backups of our Hyper-V virtuals not to interfere with scripted SQL backups that he does.

Periodically we dump the entire VM image to disk, which makes DPM perform a full SQL backup that isn't accessible to his SQL restore scripts.   So he would rather it not do that.

    Is this even possible?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

if you backup the VM, there is no SQL Backup.

You need to check, that the VM will be backed up in online mode.

  • When we backup the VM, the SQL admin tells me a new backup appears in his SQL list at that same time.  So it does seem that it is taking a SQL backup along with the full VM backup.

  • Hi,

You need to add a registry entry inside the Guest so VSS does not include the application writers during a virtual machine backup.  This will allow other backup applications running in the guest to make the SQL backup.

How to enable the Hyper-V VSS writer to ignore the VSS application writers

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtualization\VssRequestor

2.Create a registry entry of the REG_DWORD type.
3.Set the name of the registry entry to BackupType.
4.Set the value of the registry entry to 1.

Note If you set the value to 0, the Hyper-V VSS writer does not ignore the VSS application writers on the VMs.
