Lost Partitions RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi,

I just added a new partition to my 1 TB hitachi extenal usb disk drive through the computer management studio that comes with windows xp professional; I know I clicked on the unallocated space but, when the format started, I noticed that two partitions had disappeared and there was more unallocated space; so, I canceled the format. Is there any way to recover my two lost partitions?

  • Use TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk. Read the documentation carefully.

  • hi,

I was able to recover my lost partitions however, utilities like Partition Magic - unable to find drive letter - or Computer Management Disk Management snap-in are unable to partition the hitachi drive from unallocated space; however, if I attempt to partition free space, I can complete the task.

  • Can anyone suggest a better partitioning software product than Partition Magic?

GParted is a Linux products and many Windows users report more problems after using GParted than they had before using it.  Some aspects of GParted are not at all compatible with Windows.  When it is used on a new drive to create partitions it creates a boot record that is often not recognized by Windows or Windows reports it cannot use the partition.

The problem may be your system BIOS cannot handle the 1TB drive.  How old is your motherboard?

An internet search reveals an HP Elite m9340f and an HP Elite m9340r.  When you go to the HP website neither model has any Windows XP driver support, however, both have full Windows Vista support:

So, the question is: Where did you get the hardware drivers for your system?  You may well have a hardware driver problem.

Have you gone to the HP Support forum and looked for an answer there?
