Powershell won't add snapin RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Community

        I have installed window 2008 Enterprise Server.

        Now I want to use Powershell 2.0

        I have added Powershell thru Server Manager but when I try to run
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.Powershell, I get a message stating:

        "Add-PSSnapin : No snap-ins have been registered for Windows Powershell version 2."

        Since I got that message I have uninstalled and reinstalled but
    no matter what I do I get the same error message.

        The other ways that I have tried to install Powershell have been by
    downloading the different Microsoft Frameworks 3.5 sp1, 4.0 and 4.5 installers
    but when I run the associated Kb files kb960568, kb968389, kb968930, kb2506146, kb..288,
    etc, etc. I get the same error message stating:

        "This update does not apply to your system"

        The goal here is to install "Microsoft.SharePoint.Powershell".
        Note: Get-PSSnapin returns the following:

            Microsoft.PowerShell.Core = components of PowerShell.
            Microsoft.PowerShell.Host = Start-Transcript, Stop-Transcript etc, managing PowerShell console host.
            Microsoft.PowerShell.Management = management cmdlets used to manage Windows components.
            Microsoft.PowerShell.Security = cmdlets to manage Windows PowerShell security.
            Microsoft.PowerShell.Utility = utility Cmdlets used to manipulate data.

            Microsoft.PowerShell.Diagnostics = Eventing and Performance Counter cmdlets.
            Microsoft.WSMan.Management = Get-WSManInstance, Set-WSManInstance etc for WSMan operations.

        Where am I going wrong?

        Thank you

  • No snap in if you don't install SharePoint and tools.

    What version of SharePoint.  I believe you need SharePoint 2010 for PowerShell support.

    You are also posting in the wrong forum.  Either post installation issues int the Windows Server Forum or in the SharePoint forum.

  • I just reread your issue.  PowerShell does not include this support for SharePoint.

  • Hello jrv

        I am in the right forum.

        I am using Powershell to install Sharepoint 2010 Server.

        Consequently, if I can't install the Powershell snapin i won't
    be able to install Sharepoint and tools.

        This problem has just arisen.

        In the past, this always worked.  It is since I installed Windows
    2008 Enterprise Server that Powershell is not working the way
    it had anymore.

        The question is how to have Powershell install properly I guess?

        Thank you

        Are there any specific things that need to be done so that Powerhell
    is able to add the snapin because that is what the error is all about?

        Thank you

  • Hello jrv

        I don't know what you mean when you say it does not include
    this report because using Powershell is the recommended method
    and I have done this more times than I can remember before
    changing the version of Windows Server.

        Thank you

  • SharePoint must be installed to use the SharePoint Snapin.

  • Nothing much is required, please install SP 2010 on your 2008 server you will see the SharePoint Management Shell 2010

    Add-PSSnapin will work only if you have installed SharePoint product in the server or else you should enable PSRemoting on SP 2010 Servers.
