How To Setup The SharePoint Site on Web Server Instead of App Server

    Question

  • I have setup SharePoint using the 3-tier farm configuration.

Everything works, but according to my colleague, the configuration is 'wrong'.

He says that the SharePoint sites should be on the WEB server. Hence why it's called 'Web' server.

And that if the APP server goes down, the sites can still be accessible.

And any applications such as Visual Studio, Nintex, should be on the APP server.

At the moment everything is on the APP server.

He has asked me to put the sites on the WEB server not the APP server.

    How do I do this?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Techie,

Web server are basically used to serve the content to the users that is hosted in App server which has Central admin and other services hosted.

And i believe you have server farm with 1 web , 1 app and 1 db server. So no need to put anything on Web server.

Just lets the APP server host central admin, service application and host other important things.

Leave Web server to take care of the traffic(User accessing your site) because it will help you in your site browsing performance and other things.

  • OK, I understand!

One more question. What about the SQL Database? In my setup, I have installed it on the DB Server. Is this configuration correct?

Or is it also suppose to be hosted on the APP Server and only the DB services will run on the DB Server?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Techie,

Your servers will be like this

1 server - App server- which will host Central admin

2 Server- Web server- which will server the content with the help of App server

3 Server- DB server- Which will have SQL installed on it and works as back end for SharePoint.

  • Hi Rahul,

what Techie45 means is now everyone is using http://app for sharepoint access and all apps are in app too.  nothing is in web and no one is using http://web. How can he change the SharePoint to http://web instead.   so that the web is the web server and app is the application.
