Cannot Add Exchange 2003 SP2 Store in DPM 2012 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    System Center DPM 2012 SP1 installed.  Exchange Server running is Enterprise 2003 SP2.

    Within DPM, I am able to add the volumes on the Exchange server and back them up successfully.  I am not able to add the Storage Group and receive the message:

    One or more prerequisites for protecting this data source is missing.
    Ensure that the following prerequisite software is installed on arsenault02.AA.local and/or all nodes in the cluster:

    • Windows Server 2003 SP1 with Knowledge Base article 940349 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=99034).
      Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98933)

    ID: 31305

    I have reinstalled the agent two times on the protected server.  I have, I believe, verified WMI connectivity and the ability of the servers to see that the referenced Hotfix is indeed installed by using these commands:

    On the DPM server:  get-hotfix -computer ps_name | ? {$_.HotfixID -match "KB940349"}

    On the Exchange server:  wmic qfe list > c:\temp\qfe.txt

    I have checked the status of the writers and there are no errors.

    I am stumped and really need to get this working as I am already 2 days past my deadline.  I hope someone can help.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    DPM may not be able to detect that Exchange 2003 SP2 or later is installed.   Look at the msdpmcurr.errlog on the DPM Server after you get the popup error and see what version DPM is looking for versus the version returned by the protected server.

  • Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your help.  Here are the log entries immediately after an attempt.  I'm sorry for the volume but I don't know what's relevant.

  • Can someone point me in the right direction regarding the log?  I see nothing in the error log that refers to Exchange version.

  • Hi,

    OK, I just discovered that the information is not in the normal msdpm error logs, only if you enable verbose logs will you find the inquiry results I was looking for.

    The below verifies Exchange SP2 is installed.

    <snip>
    AttributeValue="Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\SMBEX01\e8073969-660e-4bfd-991f-1e25267d5e61"/><Attribute AttributeName="ComponentType" AttributeValue="FileGroup"/><Attribute AttributeName="Version" AttributeValue="6.5.7638.2"/><Attribute
    >snip<

    So lets see what DPM says for your exchange server prerequisite attributes. Please run this SQL query on the DPM Server.  If it's a cluster, run it for each node of the cluster. let me know what is returned.  Also, is the exchange server running on Windows 2003 ?

    Use DPMDB
    Select ServerAttributes from  tbl_am_installedagent
    Where deleted = 0 and serverid in (select Serverid from tbl_am_server where serverName = 'EXCHANGE_SERVER_FQDN')

  • Hi,

    Yes, Exchange is running on Windows 2003.

    Selected output from verbose log:

    AttributeValue="Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\ARSENAULT02"/><Attribute AttributeName="ComponentType" AttributeValue="FileGroup"/><Attribute AttributeName="Version" AttributeValue="0.00.0000.00"/><Attribute AttributeName="IncrementalAllowed" AttributeValue="False"/><Attribute AttributeName="ExchangeCCR" AttributeValue="False"/><Attribute AttributeName="DatabaseFiles" AttributeValue=""/><Attribute AttributeName="DatabaseLogFiles" AttributeValue=""/><Attribute AttributeName="FileGroupFiles" AttributeValue=""/><Attribute AttributeName="MirroringRole" AttributeValue=""/><Attribute AttributeName="MirroringPartner" AttributeValue=""/><Attribute AttributeName="MirroringPartnerFQDN" AttributeValue=""/></PathEntry></JunctionlessPath><StartNodeRelativePath

    Output from SQL Query:

    Server Attribute:  8589934623

    Thank you again.

  • Can anyone help with this, given the above information?  It seems as if DPM is not getting the correct version of Exchange?

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Ok, thanks for confirming, just to be sure, if you search the verbose msdpmcurr.errlog for 6.5.7638.2 - you get no hits correct ?

  • Hi,

    I think DPM either uses WMI or Exchange PowerShell commandlets to extract the version information. To be honest it's been a long time since working with Exchange 2003.   Can you install Exchange SP3 ?
