How to add external contacts to the Skype for Business address book? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I need to add an external contact to my organization's SfB addressbook. This contact will only have a phone number. Can this be done? We're running an on-prem SfB server. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Sainim,

If you create them as an AD contact then you can get them listed in your address book as well as SFB will pick that contact since it  has a phone numbe, you can also see more info in the following reference

  • Hi Sainim,

From Skype for business, it will be giving option to add SIP contacts only , if you wanted to add just the telephone numbers , you can utilize the contact section from Outlook and add there which will be reflected in sfb address book if integration is set.

  • Hi sainim,

If you want to add external contact in SFB, you need to set federation between your organization and other company, please refer to

Thanks but I want to add the contact to the global address book so everyone can find the number. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks Alice, but the external contact doesn't use SfB. It's literally just a phone number for a different organization that I want everyone to be able to find.

    Hi sainim,

For your requirement, so far, if you only have a telephone number, there is no method to add it to address book, thanks for your understanding.

If you want to achieve this goal, you could provide the feedback with the following link, we will collect all your information and add functions to our product.

Thanks for this, I ended up creating a user in AD, then enabling said user on the SfB server and setting their 'Line URI' to be the external phone number. The user now appears in the addressbook as intended, however, I am unable to make the call as I receive the following error: 'User is unavailable or may be offline'.

So now I need to figure out a way to either make this user appear online permanently or to allow calls to be made to offline users - I would prefer to do the former. Any suggestions?

  • You cannot add external contacts to your SFB global address book.Users can add to their SFB client as contact.Numbers can be added as E164 format to their SFB client, but cant be mapped with any name.

The solution is to add them as a contact in AD and then insert their phone number in E164 format in the 'Telephone Number' field. They will then sync to the addressbook.
