host headers RRS feed

  • Question

  • i have created web application with host header intranet.myorganization.com  and assigned port 80, then i create CNAME in the DNS, assigned the alias as the host header and the name of my server in the target name. but i can't open the site in that URL, this problem happens only on port 80.

  • There's two things that are going on here -- one is the setup of IIS and SharePoint and the other is the configuration of DNS.  Let's try to rule out one.  Are you familiar with how to modify your HOSTS file?  You'll want to make the change on whatever machine you are using to open this file.

You'll want to modify the following file:  C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add a line that looks like this <whatever ip address>  [TAB] intranet.myorganization.com

It should look like this:                                 intranet.myorganization.com

    Save the file.

See if that works.  The other thing you might want to consider is if you are trying to access this URL from the server itself you might be running into an issue with the Loopback check.  For more info on that see here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861/en-us
