Deploying MSI with parameters RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have an application that I have been deploying via scripts using the msiexec /i <path of application> /qn to install silently and msiexec /x <path of application> /qn to uninstall silently.

I am now trying to deploy and uninstall the same application using SCE.  I create the package, select the MSI, input the install and uninstall parameters.

I am assuming that for the install paramaters I only need to input /qn for install and uninstall and dont need to worry about placing the full msiexec string.  Is this correct?

I am having all sorts of issues trying to deploy this application via SCE, mind you I have had no problems deploying Office 2007 to the same machines.

Please confrm what the parameters should be?

    Cheers

  • Hi,

I found the installation file can be downloaded to the clients successfully but get error during the instllation.

Personally, I suspect the problem is still relate to the customized MSI package which you created, I'd like to suggest you contact  Interwoven support to get a officail MSI package.

    Thanks.

  • You should only need to include the /qn parameter based on the parameters you were using prior to SCE.

Like i said previously, I have no issues when installing this app via msiexec /i <path to msi> /qn SERIALNUMBER=02003-0132154

I should also mention that this is an EXE wrapped msi.

I have also checked the event log on the client machine and noticed an application error around faulting application idriver.exe when it begins to install.

    Cheers

  • Hi,

I'd like to suggest you deploy a batch file to run the MSI.

    1.Create a new folder.

    2. Copy the  MSI installation files to the new folder which is created in the previous step.

    3. Copy the cmd.exe and msiexec.exe to the folder as well. By default, this file is under %systemroot%\system32.

    4. In the folder, create a bat file, for example, new.bat. Then edit it to ensure it contains the following commands:

    msiexec /i <msi file name>
    /qn SERIALNUMBER=02003-0132154

    5. In the SCE console, navigate to the SOFTWARE pane.

    6. Select “New software package”, browse to the new folder and select the CMD.exe

    7. Select the check box of “Include all files and sub-folder in this location”.

    8. In the installation parameter, input “/c  new.bat”.

Note: I used new.bat in this example. Please adjust the bat file name accordingly.

    9. Click Create and deploy this package to the client computers.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Eric

I have seen this solution in another thread, but by deploying the application in this manner will not allow me to uninstall it easily at a later date?  This is an application that gets updated every 3 months.

If I was to deploy it in the above manner, I would then need to create the same batch file but with uninstall parameters? Am I correct?

Is my problem a limitation or known issue with SCE?  I am really keen in purchasing this product, but have some concerns with software deployment and the strength of this product in that area.

  • Hi,

As  this is an EXE wrapped msi file. I'd like to suggest you test whether this .MSI file can installed under System accoutn.

    1. Download PsExec tool from this website:  http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/PsTools.zip

    2. Extract the file.

    3.  Open a command prompt, navigate to the PsExec tool folder.

    4.
Please run “psexec -i -d -s cmd” to open a new command prompt.

In the new CMD window, run “msiexec.exe /i <path of the file> /qn SERIALNUMBER=02003-0132154”, then the MSI file will be running using System account, please check whether it is successful.

If it cannot run under System accoutn, I suspect the problem occured during the process of creating msi file.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Did you set the "Automatic Update" setting to "Automatic" or "Downlaod, but let me choose when to install?"

Also, Could you please run "wuauclt /detectnow" on the clients to check whether the windows update icon appears?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Eric

    I am doing this remotely so I am using the detect software button through SCE.  I noticed that the parameters dissappeared so I had to  input them in again.  Now I am getting the below in the windowsupdatelog;

I am persistent to try and get this work and install automatically.

    Thanks again.

  • Well.. I finally got an error 16 hours later;  I am starting to lose faith in this product if I can't even deploy an app using the alternate cmd.exe and batch file method, even though I would prefer not to.  I am happy to upload the entire installation files for testing if required.

    thankins

  • Hi,

I found the installation file can be downloaded to the clients successfully but get error during the instllation.

Personally, I suspect the problem is still relate to the customized MSI package which you created, I'd like to suggest you contact  Interwoven support to get a officail MSI package.

    Thanks.

  • Ok.  I will have no luck with Interwoven as I am already using their MSI.  Mind you the installation works fine when using the msiexec and the provided parameters for silent intallation from a command prompt under administrative credentials.

    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Hi,

From your previous reply, I know that the manually installation works fine.

As SCE deployed the software via WSUS componet which is different from directly installation, I think the offical MSI package will help to resolve the problem.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

  • If it is a msi wrapped in an exe, you should be able to extract the msi when you launch the setup. After launching look in your temp folders for newly created msi files.

    Thursday, November 29, 2007 5:35 PM
  • 2007-10-26 11:47:59:474 3088 8f8 Handler   : MSI transaction completed. MSI: 0x80070667

0x80070667 is the error code for 'bad command line'

essentials automatically makes msi packages silent, so take out the /qn parameter and it should work.

    that's probably all it is.
