IS Virtual Bytes is outside the calculated baseline RRS feed

  • Question

  • We keep seeing an Information Store alert that 'The IS Virtual Bytes is
outside the calculated baseline. The current value is 1869060778.66667'

I've attempted to tweak the override settings, but I can't determine what I
should set it to.  Currently, the Inner Sensitivity is set to 3.31.  I've
    tried 3.81 as well.

I even opened a ticket with Microsoft about this, and they said that our
Exchange server is within parameters and that this is not a valid alert.  I'm
not 100% sure about this though.  I've also tried the SolarWinds Exchange
Monitor tool, and it also reports that the 'Avail. Virtual Memory' is on the
    yellow (warning) range.

But, presuming that we are running at acceptable parameters, how do I quiet
    SCOM2007?

  • There are two ways you could proceed, disable the Self Tuning Threshold (STT) monitor and replace it with a static samples monitor, or change the sensitivity of the STT.

I would recommend disabling the existing monitor "IS Virtual Bytes Monitor".  Then I would create a new monitor per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309655.aspx
I would recommend using 2.5 GB as the threshold if you have the /3GB boot switch, or 1.5 GB if you don't have the /3GB boot option set as the threshold for alerting.

Check out Kevin Holman's blog for information on changing the sensitivity of the existing monitor http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2008/03/19/self-tuning-thresholds-love-and-hate.aspx

  • Thanks - I tried doing both.  I'm curious to see first how the new levels to the existing monitor work out.  I set the inner threshold to 4.01 and the outer to 4.51.  It did remove it from the Active Alerts page.  I also created a unit monitor that tracks the Process\Store\Virtual Bytes with a high threshold of 2500000000 (2.5GB)

  • You could also look in the MP Guide for the Exchange 2003 MP, it has some details in terms of tuning the STTs.

  • Sorry for the somewhat technical language...

The EXchange 2003 Management Pack has a Management Pack Guide, documentation that talks about the Management Pack and how to configure it. You can find it online here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd279691.aspx

Two specific chapters talk about Self-Tuning Threshold monitors and how to deal with them, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd146142.aspx and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd146129.aspx
