Trouble with azure online protection RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I was trying to add online protection for our fileserver, when I ran into this error:

The backup operation failed because the maximum allowed data source size of 1700 GB was exceeded. (ID 100073)

The DPM server is running WS2016 and DPM 2016UR1 with Azure backup agent 2.0.9052.0. The server has been updated from DPM2012.

The fileserver is running WS2012R2 in a 2-node failover cluster.

According to this blog https://azure.microsoft.com/da-dk/blog/azure-backup-enables-backup-of-large-volumes-vms-databases-and-more/ the max data source size is 54400GB. The data source I was trying to backup was around 2000GB.

How can I add online protection for this data source?

  • After a couple of tries, it started using VHDX files and I no longer have the problem.

Therefore I will close this thread.

  • The Problem still exists after I have updated to DPM 2016 UR2 and Azure agent 2.0.9062.0

  • Hi,

This error can occur if we're having problems growing the metadata .vhd file.  Check how much free space you have where the scratch folder is located.

To see the error code associated with the backup failure, perform the following steps and see if the error code matches this one.

WARNING Failed: Hr: = [0x8004240f] Backup Progress: Failed

    1) CD C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\Temp

    2) Find /I "backup progress" cbengine*.errlog

  • It's definitely failing while trying to extent the volume.

WARNING Failed: Hr: = [0x8004240f] Error in extending the volume.

Please mount this .vhd manually and see what size the disk and volume on it are.

From administrative command prompt run diskpart.exe - then following commands.

    select vdisk file=V:\Scratch\VHDs\{94610104-F03E-4372-9A88-47066D19FC61}\{79DF10AA-7D07-4A1E-B2D6-F422B5B7B583}.vhd

    attach vdisk readonly

Now open Windows disk management and see how large that virtual disk is and the size of the volume.  When done, you can detach the vdisk.

    detach vdisk

During an online backup, you should see the same virtual disk get mounted and if the volume needs extended you should see it grow.
