Tracking a missing email

    Question

  • An email is arrived at Barracuda spam firewall and is shown delivered to exchange. But the mailbox doesn't receive the email. How can the email be tracked to see why it happened? Thanks.

What does Exchange Message tracking say for that message?

  • Hi AlanG2015,

You can use command below to check detail information about mail flow for this email:

    Get-MessageTrackingLog -Sender xx@xx.xx -Recipients xx@xx.xx -MessageSubject "xxxx" -Start "x/x/xxxx" -End "x/x/xxxx"

If this email was blocked by Exchange server, you can see an event id like "fail", and you can know why this email was blocked from logs.

For more information about it, you can have a look about this article: Get-MessageTrackingLog

    Regards,

  • I ran Get-MessageTrackingLog -Sender xx@xx.xx -Recipients xx@xx.xx -MessageSubject "xxxx". But nothing returns. But Barracuda log shows that it received the email. It should have automatically send the email to exchange. But there is not record on exchange for it.

Change the filter. What does it show for all messages sent to the recipient for example? (removing the sender and messagesubject filter)

  • Hi AlanG2015,

As Andy said, could you find this email with less filter? Such as:

    Get-MessageTrackingLog -Recipients xx@xx.xx -MessageSubject "xx"

Before using this command, you should replace the value of those two parameters with a specific value.

    Regards,

    Kyle Xu
