Hyper-V Cluster CSV, DPM2010, VSS Hardware Provider RRS feed

  • Question

  • We use the DPM2010 for our VM backup, but I´m not sure whether DPM uses VSS Software or VSS Hardware Provider..

    Our Infrastructure:
    Hyper-V R2 Cluster (CSV) with 3 nodes
    FC SAN
    NetApp Storage

NetApp VSS Hardware Provider is installed and configured on each Cluster nodes, but not on the DPM Server – is it necessary ?

The VMs will be backed up successfully. On event log I can see for example:
ONTAP VSS hardware provider service has started.
Data ONTAP VSS hardware provider is loaded.
Data ONTAP VSS hardware provider is adding a source lun
    And after the backup
Data ONTAP VSS hardware provider has successfully unmapped and deleted a lun

The problem is, on cluster nodes will be created following event:
    Protokollname: System
    Quelle:        Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
    Datum:         06.06.2011 18:01:56
    Ereignis-ID:   5121
    Aufgabenkategorie:Freigegebenes Clustervolume
    Ebene:         Fehler
    Schlüsselwörter:
    Benutzer:      SYSTEM
    Computer:      HVCLUSVR1
    Beschreibung:

That means one of the nodes cannot have direct access to the storage and all I/O is then routed over the network and this affects the performance of all VMs on the cluster 

With vssadmin list providers I see also the hardware provider is working

Any idea why this event appears on the cluster and how can I solve this issue ?

    Thanks a lot

  • Hi Neo T!

When using the VSS hardware providor your CSV volumes will not enter a redirected state while backing up your virtual machines. The thing that decides if you can use VSS hardware providor or not is your SAN or storage solution. If the manufacturte has a written VSS Hardware Providor you must install the "software" on the DPM server and present the LUN's where the virtual servers is present. This is becauase DPM must know how to initialize the VSS hardware providor (this is made by the software from you SAN manufacturer) and wich LUN the virtual servers is present on.

By design DPM will always try to backup a Hyper-V CSV cluster using VSS Hardware Providor and backing up three virtual machines at the time. Look at this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh146886.aspx#phrss it's the link to the HCL (Harsware Complient List) or tested (and supported) hardware from Microsoft.

  • Hi,

The DPM server does NOT need to have the VSS hardware provider software installed, it is only needed on the cluster nodes.  The 5121 events are for the most part benign and you will need to work with the hardware vendor to troubleshoot.

    See http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmhypervbackup/thread/95ae8643-d169-4eb3-b51c-58641cce0c38
