CopyProfile - When do the bits get copied? RRS feed

  • Question

  • From my understanding, the CopyProfile doesn't come into play until an image is deployed, but at what point of the deployment process does the built-in admin profile actually get copied to the DefaultUser profile? Does it happen during the installation of the OS?  If so, what is the best method to make changes to the DefaultProfile during the deployment? Lastly, I have to build a reference image WITHOUT using MDT, (manually from DVD). If I leave the built-in administrator disabled and use a newly created local admin account to be my default user template, will CopyProfile use that account to create the DefaultUser profile?

  • I was going to write a long-ish answer, but David Segura beat me to it. His blog post explains the copy profile functionality in great detail and also answers your inquiry as to when it happens (hint: specialize phase before Windows fully boots up for the first time) qnd how to verify that: https://winpeguy.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/mdt-unattend-xml-copyprofile/amp/

  • The Copy Profile happens when the windows account logs in for the first time, this happens for each new local user created or when a domain account logs in. As i understand It copies the default user profile to the newly created user profile logged in when the copy profile setting is enabled in the unattend.xml. I'd recommend doing all customisation's on the built in account before sysprep. then have the builtin account disabled during deployment

  • Yes, I understand that new users get the profile from the default user profile, but when does the, "Default User" profile get created? I do customize the built-in account before sysprep, but that is where the confusion starts to build. From my understanding, the built-in account profile is NOT copied to the default user profile during the sysprep and capture process, (correct me if I'm wrong). If the unattend.xml file is set to copyprofile=true, the built-in profile is copied to the default user profile during deployment???? If so, during which phase of the deployment,, initial setup???  after setup completes?
