Fast Search - which document types get a thumbnail and preview RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it really only Word and PowerPoint?

Autonomy supports 100+ doc types for thumbnails and previews

  • Document thumbnails in FAST search are managed through the use of SharePoint Office Web Applications so thumbnails and preview are only available for Office file types.

  • Paul,

Can you be a bit more specific on this?  Which "Office file types"?

So far, I only see Word and PowerPoint displaying thumbnails...what about Excel, Visio, OneNote, etc?

  • In checking further, you are correct.  Thumbnails are only available for Word docs and previews are available for PowerPoint slides.  Excel, Visio, etc thumbnails are not currently supported.

  • Is there something special I need to do to enable these thumbnails? I have a site collection configured with the 'FAST Search Center' template and it's functioning great, except that thumbnails for powerpoint/word don't appear. I have checked the 'Search Core Results' webpart and verified that 'Enable Document Preview For Powerpoint' and 'Enable Thumbnail Preview For Word' are enabled.

Update: I'm retarded - I need to install Office Web Applications Companion (WAC) on the SharePoint server.

  • Hi,

I'm having the same problem as rossgemuend - powerpoint/word thumbnails preview doesn't work! Windows server R2 x64 with Fast for SP 2010 Foundation version installed, Office Web Applications 64 bit are also installed.

I've checked under 'Search Core Results' webpart and verified that 'Enable Document Preview For Powerpoint' and 'Enable Thumbnail Preview For Word' are enabled. What can be the problem/cause for the thumbnails not to work?

    Thnx in advance,

    Dima.

Also I am getting a bit confused with Office Web Application Companion (WAC), isnt that now called Office Web Apps?

  • The correct name is Office Web Applications. 'WAC' is a term only used in SharePoint 2007.

A prerequisite for preview is that the document is stored on a SharePoint 2010 site that has OWA enabled. Hence, it is not sufficient to have it enabled on the site/farm where the search runs. The actual creation of the preview is performed on the content farm where the document is crawled from. The actual request for the preview document is performed directly from the client using JavaScript. Hence, if you do not get previews even if the above condition is met, there may be connectivity issues between the client (i.e. where the browser runs) and the content farm.

Are they available for all word versions or only docx types?

  • For preview you might want to check out BA-Insights Longitude for SharePoint. They have a preview module which supports a lot more formats than SP2010 out of the box.

Yes, thumbnails are only supported with pptx and docx.  I know the next question will be, do they need to be Office 2010 versions or will 2007 versions work.  I don't have the anser but hope to soon.  I've heard mixed answers.

If FAST thumbnails only work for the Office 2010 versions then we likely won't implement FAST until organization has made the upgrade.

  • Hi Knut,

Does that mean that preview for documents resided somewhere else besides SharePoint 2010 site, e.g. external database, Web, etc. wouldn't work?

    Thank you,

  • Sadhak, this is correct. I installed Office Web Apps myself believing I could get thumbs and preview from an external source, but it´s only for SP2010 stored content.

Also make a note of never uninstalling Office Web Apps if you have installed it. It will remove your server from the Farm and cause you much grief.

  • I've tested this in regards to a post I'm doing, and it supports both doc/docx and ppt/pptx. So formats 97-2010.

  • There is also a free search preview component that supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF & image files. Short demo is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSevfpobjfY

It works with FAST as well as standard SharePoint Server Search and even SharePoint Foundation Search.

    Available for download here: http://rebelsearch.net/products/preview4sp

  • Hardly free - I looked on the website -

"Who can get a FREE copy?

Microsoft MVPs, Distinguished Scientists and people recognized by prestigious organizations like ACM, IEEE and others."

For everybody else  it's $14,500/WFE (That's right - more expensive than a MOSS licence!)

    Also only supports 50,000 docs/index

Looks like it works well enough - from the demo - but at those prices I'm not buying

    Cheers

  • Everyone could get a free copy!

The info you mentioned is for a different product (standalone search engine called "Rebel Search").

But the Search Preview component is available free of charge.

Just click the link "download it for free now" here http://rebelsearch.net/products/preview4sp (just above the demo video).

PS. sorry for a confusion. Going to update the website shortly to make things clear.  Done.

  • You can also check out http://thumbextsp.codeplex.com/ which works for all SharePoint editions. And has previews for web pages as well as OWA.
