Volumebackup not failing after Checkpoint reversion RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I had an interesting occurrence the other day and would like the opinion of others about it.

    First the system setup:

    Hyper-V host: Windows Server 2012 R2
    VM: Windows Server 2012 R2
    DPM: DPM 2012R2

The D partition of the VM is backup up using a DPM agent within the VM.

After shutting the VM down, creating a Checkpoint on the Hyper-V host and starting the VM back up all is fine and the backup continues. I then had to revert back to the previously created Checkpoint the DPM still shows the backup as OK.

After half a day we had to restore some files which were created after reverting the VM back to the Checkpoint, but the newly added files did not show in the Recovery tab in DPM.

After some investigating I noticed that all Sync job for the volume were the same size (0,13MB) regardless what had changed, even a newly added 5GB ISO.

The problem was easily resolved executing a Consistency Check, but had I not noticed this half a day later the consequences could have been catastrophic.

My question now is: How could this happen? Should the DPM not notice such a problem and notify me that there is an inconsistency?

I would very much appreciate your opinion on that issue.
