SCCM OSD Deployment to remote Workstation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Sorry if this is an obvious or silly question.

Would I be able to deploy an OS image (i.e a Task sequence with os etc) to a machine on a reomte site? - without the use of a CD/DVD/USB.

I have a client PC on a site with no IT staff and the user is not computer literate. I would like to re-image the users PC without going to site with DVD etc.

We use SCCM 2007 to re-image workstations know at our primary site, but would love to be able to cut down the traveling?

    Thanks,

  • nolim8t,

You can use the "Capture Windows Settings" task sequence step to migrate the computer name so that when you advertise a OSD task sequence to the computer it will keep the name when it is loaded with the new OS. You can also use the "Capture Network Settings" task sequence step to migrate the domain membership.

  • Hi,

Sure you can have the computer perform PXE boot (F12) and initiate the installation.

  • Thanks, but how does it know what task sequence to chose from?. I have 4 TS advertised to the Unknown Computer Collection, which we PXE all our machines from.

Also, maybe another daft question, but I do change the file to .n12, will the machine not continue to boot into PXE, everytime the machine starts?

    Thanks Kent

Assuming you have a DP or Branch DP to cover that location. You could send an OSD advertisement to the machine and do a zero touch install to put down a clean OS and any applications you want.

  • Thanks Chris.

Are you able to give me a quick bullet point on how?

I have had a look at all the options, but what I am getting after change the file to .n12, I am still be presented with the task sequence options.

    Thanks,
    Gareth

  • .n12 would not apply if you were sending an OSD advertisement through ConfigMgr, that would run OS to OS and therefore media/pxe boot would not apply.

If you right click on the TS, then create advertisement, then send that to a collection containing the computer/computers you want to reimage (and if you set it mandatory) then it'll run at the specified time and will reimage those machines from OS to OS.  No pxe boot required.

    Does that answer your question?

  • Hi i was wondering about a very similar issue. We don't currently use any OS deployment solution and we have a lot of remote users that connect in via citrix so no VPN or anything like that. Can SCCM handle these for a remote deployment?

Sorry but my knowledge is limited.

Correct. but my question is how do you name the pc to the company standard name (eg:PCD....)?

    Thank.
