Move virtual machine to another host and DPM protection RRS feed

  • Question

  • I use DPM 2010.

I have three machines hosting my virtual servers.

Now I moved a vm from one server to the other.

How can I "move" the machine in DPM without removing the backup of the machine and recreating it from scratch - including a full sync transferring lots of data?

  • The only thing you can do is to stop the protection of the VM and retain the data. When you re-create the protection DPM will recon that old data is present in the "inavtive protection......" group at the bottom of the console.

After you re-enable the protection you must do a concistencey check.

  • This didn't work as expected.

    • I removed the old vm from the protection group
    • I added the vm on the new host
    • Started creating a recovery point

Now DPM is creating a new replica and the old vm is still there in the "inactive protection" group.

It doesn't seem to automatically detect that it can use the old data sitting there...

After finishing the replication the old vm is still there.
