Licensing RDS server per user RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have a requirement of allowing five concurrent users to connect to a windows server 2016, and we are purchasing 3 RDS licenses because windows server allows 2 concurrent sessions.

My question is do I need to purchase 5 licenses for the users or just 3.

  • If you install the RD Session Host role to set your server as a "Terminal Server", then you must have anough license for each users.

In your case you said that you have 5 users, then you need 5 User CAL.

  • Hi,

Windows Server system default 2 remote sessions are only allowed for admin purpose. As you had mentioned that you have 5 users, then, 5 user CALs are necessary if you choose user CALs type.

    >When you use the Per User model, licensing is not enforced and each user is granted a license to connect to an RD Session Host from any number of devices. The license server issues licenses from the available CAL pool or the Over-Used CAL pool - it’s your responsibility to ensure that all of your users have a valid license and zero Over-Used CALs - otherwise, you're in violation of the Remote Desktop Services license terms.
