Access is denied opening My Documents RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

When I try opening a user's "My Documents" folder using a adminstrator user account, I get the following error:

    "Access is denied"

I've tried changing the permissions and have given full control to the administrators, but get a "access is denied" error trying to change the permissions also.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this and how to access the files in the folder?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Smile

Go to Orb > Accesories > Right-click command prompt and select "Run as administrator". In the command prompt window type in : takeown /f c:\users\yourusername

Have you tried accesing the folder from another operating system? This might have caused the permissions error.

This problem is occuring intermittently when accessing some of my folders, ie. folders in the IIS 7 webroot and subfolders, and folders and subfolders for certain users, I ran a upgrade installation when installing Vista Ultimate from XP SP2, so I am not sure if they are the users from the XP operating system or Vista, however with administator rights I should have the ability to access all folders in my c:\.

    Thanks,

  • I went to the folder that had the "shortcut arrow" symbol that denied me access, and right clicked the folder and went to properties. There are several tabs and one is security. The security tab has a list of users and rights and priveleges. The bottom list has an advanced button, click that and edit the list and remove the one that says deny. This fixed mine, however some folders only have 2 tabs and refers to a hotkey, I'm trying to figure that out.

  • That worked for me thanks, but I would like to know what caused it, was it a Vista thing and how do I put my icons so they arent showing the short cut arrow I have tried the obvious and right clicked the icon, general, change icon and it doesnt seem to work?

Any idea if it is a Vista thing is there going to be a fix because I have just re installed vista as it happened to me previously and I thought it was something I had done! Surprise(

  • I think it's a part of the paranoia that is exhibited with VISTA, from the UAC to, duplicating folders that can't be accessed.

The VISTA OS has done some unusual things, but I suspect that Microsoft wants people to not mess around with their stuff.
