App-V apps intermittantly fail to install via SCCM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a few sequenced apps deployed using SCCM to our work computers.  These apps are deployed to User collections.  When a new computer is brought online they intermittently fail to install, however if you manually 'retry' the installation in Software Center, after the 4th or 5th attempt of retrying they install successfully.  Some apps fail to automatically install far more than others with one app failing to install consistently.

When the apps fail to install the streaming-transport debug log shows errors for Auto-Proxy detection and failure to send or receive HTTP responses to the distribution point full path to the .appv package file.  Send failures return an HResult of 0x80190193.  Receive failures return an HResult of 0x80190193 or 0x80072f0c.

The AppEnforce.log file returns an HResult of 80190193 and "The provided URL could not be resolved.  Please check that the URL is valid."  I assumed this to be the FQDN part of the command line that points at the DP package location.  The bit that puzzles me the most is that if it was a problem with the DP then surely none of the apps would install, and certainly a persisting with a manual 'retry' wouldn't produce a successful install result.

We use a proxy server.  AutoDetect proxy settings in IE is disabled and the FQDN of the Site Server/Distribution Point has been added to the Intranet Zone in IE.  If I tell IE not to use a proxy at all I still get the same errors (including the auto proxy detection error) in the Streaming-transport debug log for the apps that have failed to install.

The App-V 5 deployment types are all configured to stream rather than download and run.  If I switch them to 'download and run' they all consistently install without errors.

App-V clients are configured to use 'shared cache mode' and 'package scripts' is enabled.

Our environment is as follows: SCCM 2012 SP1 running on Server 2012.  App-V 5 SP1 clients installed on Windows 7 Enterprise with SP1.

Any ideas as to what is going on would be welcomed as I've been tearing my hair out with this for a week!

  • Hi

Can you please tell me if you got to the bottom of this, we are having the same issue?

    Thanks

  • Delete the \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Catalog\Packages\<PackageID> folder for the affected app and get the user to log off and on and try again.

  • Thanks but this is not related to the currently logged on user, these are required device deployments not user deployments. The deployments install fine if set to "download content from distribution point and run locally" but only occasionally when set to "stream content from distribution point".

  • Hi guys..

Having the exact same issue in our environment.

    CM2012 SP1, Windows 7 x64 SP1 with APP-V 5 client.

Flow of issue is as follows.

    On initial logon in AppEnforce.log

Add-AppvClientPackage : The provided URL could not be resolved. Please check that the URL is valid. HRESULT: 80190193.

Manually retry seven times and then attempts to contact NOCERT_SMS_DP_SMSPKG$ for content instead. Then we receive:

Publish-AppvClientPackage : Failure to communicate with Application Virtualization Service. Operation attempted: Publish AppV Package. HRESULT: 800706BE.

We retry a further two times and then the application installs.

    Not exactly production ready :)

NOTE: If I set IIS  to *ignore client certificates* on SMS_DP_SMSPKG$ it works first time but my certificates seem legit ?!?!?!?

    Anyone have any further ideas?

    Thanks!

  • Do you have any Riverbed or similar wan optimization technologies between the client and the DP?  I've seen such devices interfere with successful policy request and App-V streaming.  Just a thought.

  • Hey MadLuka.

Sadly not. Only on the other side of that subnet :)

Really having a rough time with the whole APP-V integration.

Decided to put a hold on SSL so I could progress with some more APP-V testing.

Download and execute works perfectly but receive intermittent error when streaming:

Add-AppvClientPackage : Failure to communicate with Application Virtualization
Service. Operation attempted: Configure AppV Package. HRESULT: 800706BE.

Entirely intermittent. Sometimes it will work first time. Sometimes after several retries. Sometimes one app will install fine and the second will generate the error then install itself an hour later.

I check appenforce.log as well as the advanced debug logs in event viewer APP-V node and can't see anything that looks like an error.

To which component does the Application Virtualization Service refer and which log should I refer to when using SCCM integration?

    Cheers!

  • That doesn look like a ConfigMgr issue. Its the powershell cmdlet for the App-V client trying to communicate with the App-V service. I would say this is an issue with the service or the client. Reinstall the App-V client and see if the issue persists, also makes sure you are using the proper client/sequencer versions.

  • We switched to "Download and Install" rather than stream in the short term to get round the problem.  Just before I was redeployed to another project I was beginning to get somewhere with troubleshooting CRL checking in CRM (enabled by default) and certificates.  Sorry I don't have an answer yet but I hope it helps others where to look.

  • Hey Tim,

Since we're targeting  vmware view machines in floating pools with roaming profiles we can't really go live with download and execute as the users will stab away at the dead shortcuts and raise calls with service desk until their apps finish downloading.

Going to try and resolve the intermittent Add-AppvClientPackage and Publish-AppvClientPackage and return to the SSL issue later.

  • Are there any updates regarding this issue? we are experiencing the exact same issue in our environment and we can't find a fix.

  • Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2956985

Intermittent streaming stems from some kind of bug when streaming across disparate v-lans.
