Automatically add a user to subsite owners group without inheriting permissions? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was wondering if it's possible to automatically add a user to the owners group of every subsite created under a particular site.  We have one user who needs to have full control of every one of these subsites but because each of them are aimed at different people, we cannot have them inheriting permissions.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Mikey,

If the site you mentioned means site collection, as a workaround, you could add the user as site collection administrator, which will make the account to have full control permissions to all the sub-sites.

There are some differences between site collection administrator and site owner, please refer to the following article:

  • A web application policy may be the way to go, but it may also be too broad a brush.  I got hit with the opposite problem using a web app policy: http://paulgalvin.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!1CC1EDB3DAA9B8AA!255.entry

  • Thanks for the response.  Unfortunately, you are correct in that it's a bit too broad.  I would need to do this only on 1 site and all it's child sites, not the entire web app.

  • Agreed with Lionel. Try substituting your MOSS server access name to "intranet": http://intranet/_layouts/mngsiteadmin.aspx which should direct you there.

Site Collection Administrators have full privilage over main and subordinate sites.

  • Sorry guys, I did mean just a normal site.  We have a single site collection for all of our sites, I just want this person to have full control of one of those sites and all the sites created beneath.  Thanks for the ideas though.
