Switch from Homegroup to Workgroup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I had 4 W7 PCs in a Workgroup WiFi network, sharing files, Internet connection and printers each other, one of those W7 PCs was upgraded to Windows 10, and it have Homegroup instead of Workgroup, it can connect to WiFi and Internet, but can't connect into Workgroup so it cant share folders and devices, I suspect it's because it have Homegroup instead of Workgroup, is there a way to switch this PC to Workgroup?

Tried this method, but ain't helped at all:

    1. Press Windows+ X, select System.

    2. Click on Advanced System settings.

    3. Under Computer Name tab click on change.

    4. Under “Member Of” change the Workgroup name

    5. Then click on OK, then when prompted reboot your device

When run the network assitant to join the Workgroup only apear the "Homegroup" as option, and cant join my Workgroup with this W10 PC

Thanks for any hint to solve this issue

  •   Homegroup sharing is completely different from workgroup sharing. Windows 10 should be able to do either.

Workgroup sharing in the old NT style shares using Netbios names.  Have you put the Win 10 machine in the same workgroup as the other machines (Control Panel|System). Have you enabled file and printer sharing?

  • Hi,

As mentioned by Bill, joining Home Group won’t affect access of WorkGroup, in addition, if you decide to leave from HomeGroup, search for “HomeGroup”, under HomeGroup panel click “leave the HomeGroup”.
