GPO registry key failing

    Question

  • Hi,

Hoping someone here can help.  I'm trying to deploy some reg keys using GPO and am having partial success.  Any keys for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE will work great, however all keys for HKEY_CURRENT_USER are failing. I've checked on the clients and none of the HKCU keys are there but when I run GP Results I'm shown the result 'success'.  I'm scratching my head and hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Server is 2012 R2, clients are Win 8.1 Ent.

    Any help appreciated!

    J

Before going further, how did we deploy the registry keys for HKEY_CURRENT_USER node, under Computer Configuration or User Configuration? For HKEY_CURRENT_USER is a hive for user settings, to deploy registry keys for this hive, we need to do it via Registry extension under User Configuration, i.e. User Configuration\Preferences\ Windows Settings\ Registry.

As Frank said - if you use HKCU in the computer part, your values will
    end up in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (aka HKU\S-1-5-18) :-)
