Does WSUS have the ability to deploy Windows 10 upgrade to Windows 7/8 domain clients? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The written process of deploying Windows 10 to domain clients by removing them from the domain first and then running the windows update will be too time consuming. I would like to know if WSUS will give you the option to upgrade domain member Windows 7 computers while still in the domain?

  • You certainly can upgrade PCs while still in the domain and retain their domain membership, but WSUS is not the way to do it.  You should use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Update 2, which will allow you to create a "deployment" and very simple task sequence that will launch the in-place upgrade.

A more hands-on approach would be to let the user just launch the upgrade from the .ISO (burned to removable media) from within their running OS.. but the approach I recommended above is more automated for their experience.  Once configured, you just send them a link to launch the upgrade, and everything else happens over the local network.

The MDT approach also gives you the opportunity to remove old versions of apps and install newer ones, or make other changes to their configuration, all while not completely wiping out what they have.  That takes a bit more understanding of customizing the task sequence, but it can be done.

    Hope this answers your question,
