Project Online trial with existing stand alone Project Professional 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I would like to evaluate Project Online for my company. My company has an Office 365 subscription (for SharePoint online) but has locally installed versions of Office applications, and I have Project Professional 2016 installed.

For the trial, I chose to create a separate microsoft online account with the *.onmicrosoft.com User id, and didn't add the trial to my company subscription. When going through the setup however the installer failed with the error message.

"Click to Run installer encountered a problem because you have Microsoft Visio Professional 2016, Microsoft Office Professional 2016, Microsoft Project Project 2016 installed on your computer."

The Help link on the error dialog box indicates I need to uninstall the MSI version of Project Professional 2016.

What is my next step? Am I able to run the Project Online trial with a local and licenced version of Project Professional 2016?

The web portal doesn't appear to give me any option to bypass the Trial Project Online installation and use my locally installed Project Professional 2016. I don't want to uninstall my company's licenced version as suggested by the Help Page, as this is a trial only.

  • Hello,

Yes you can connect the MSI Project Professional 2016 version to Project Online. All you need to do it create the connection to Project Online from your Project Professional 2016 client. From Project Pro 2016, click the Info > Manage Accounts button. A Project Web App Accounts window will appear. Click Add and complete the properties. Account Name is your reference to the connection, so this can be anything you like, then the Project Server URL needs to be https://<PWAURL> for example: https://mytrial.sharepoint.com/sites/pwa - without the /default.aspx. You can choose to set this as the default account if needed. Click OK. Then on the Project Web App Account, for the When starting option, you probably want to set that to "Choose an account" then click OK - but this depends on what you set as default etc. and how many accounts you have / use. Close Project Professional then relaunch it, it will ask you to select the account if you changed the "When Starting" option. Select the Project Online acccount and you will probably be prompted for credentials - enter the onmicrosoft.com details then you should be good to go.
