Server manager - Local server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm having problem installing IIS 10 on Server manager (Windows Server 2016).

When opening server manager as a local administrator the display looks like this:

/cant' add images before my account is verified.. Basically the dashboard has only three options: 1) add other servers to manage; 2) add roles and features; 3) Create a server group

That is, no server is yet available. To my understanding I only need a local server to perform the installation of the IIS 10 but how do I add it? I'm aware that you can add servers by clicking Manage Add server but shouldn't the local server be available by default?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Some more information: I actually have Windows 10 installed and not Windows Server 2016 - can this be the reason I can't see the local server?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there!

As far as I know Windows 10 shouldn't have Server Manager, it is only on servers.

This is most likely the issue here.

To add IIS on your Windows 10:

    1) Go to Start and search for "Features" then open the Turn Windows features on or off

    2) Check the box for Internet Information Services and other things you need.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hi Leon,

Thanks for the answer. I have now enabled IIS. Still have to check if I did it correctly.

    Thank you!

FYI - I was actually able to enable the Server Manager for Windows 10 but I can't manage my local server from it. It can only be done with Windows Server apparently, as Microsoft states:

"The Server Manager console is included with Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 10. Note that when Remote Server Administration Tools is installed on a client computer, you cannot manage the local computer by using Server Manager; Server Manager cannot be used to manage computers or devices that are running a Windows client operating system. You can only use Server Manager to manage Windows-based servers."
