KB4016635- Start Menu and Settings App Broken

    Question

  • Hi,

We have had many pcs with broken start menus and settings apps after installing this update.... any ideas anyone?

We have ended up running the 1607 iso on the machines and keeping apps and files, then running the updates, but not good as its a time consuming fix....

Seen many so called fixes on the web none of which seem to work, anyone have a quick fix that actually works maybe one that reinstalls the settings app?

Don't have a "quick fix" but I am curious if you tried just uninstalling the update to determine if the problem goes away?

In March, there was the Patch Tuesday cumulative update (CU) KB4013429 (14393.953), followed by the KB4015438 CU (14393.969) and finally the KB4016635 CU (14393.970).  Did you update directly from January's build (14393.7xx) using KB4016635?  If you uninstall the suspect CU, you could download the others from Microsoft Catalog site and see if a sequential update with the others changes anything.  There are only four specific fixes that distinguish the first March CU from the most recent.

What you have done is the best solution, albeit time consuming.

You could give this tutorial a try and see if that helps.......

  • Hi ,

Please re-register all apps with the following command in the PowerShell running as Administrator:
    "Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}"

If you still can’t open the Start menu or Settings App, try creating a new local administrator account to see whether you can open the Start menu using that account.

    Best regards
