Remote Connectivity Analyzer verification challenge always fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to debug some connectivity issues related to accessing some on-prem mailboxes as well as some mailboxes that are being moved to Office 365.

I wanted to use the Remote Connectivity Analyzer but over the last couple of days I have been unable to get past the verification step so that I can actually run the tests.  I have tried using Edge, IE11 and Chrome on Windows 10, and Windows Server 2012R2. I have had people looking over my shoulder as I type in the verification code to be sure I am putting in the correct code and I keep getting the following message:

"testconnectivity.microsoft.com says: Verifying the challenge failed. Please refresh the page and try again"

The page specifically says that the code is NOT case-sensitive but I have tried it both ways and still get the error.

Anyone run into this?  Work arounds?  Any thought would be a help,

    Thanks in advance,

    Mike Askwith

So, anyone have a real contact at Microsoft to get hold of?

    Wednesday, December 14, 2016 11:15 PM
  • This tool has been down all week and it's not acceptable. I've emailed the feedback twice so far and had no response. There is nothing from the team posted on the forums or blogs, nor twitter or even facebook.

I'm in the middle of setting up our test environment and have an autodiscover issue (i think) and need this tool to continue testing it.

Our 60,000 user production migration is scheduled for April 2017 and even though that's a few months away, I'm pretty uncomfortable in not being able to progress our testing. Our timelines are pretty tight anyway and this is just making it worse. Add in Christmas and things are getting worrisome.

  • Mike,

You could always try the "Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer Tool".  Click on the client tab and install this offline utility.  It doesn't have every single test that the website does but it might help you troubleshoot your connectivity issues.  I think the client is on version 2.6.

    ~ Micah ~

The issue that most people probably have is that the MCA Tool is great for testing on your site.

The Remote Connectivity Analyzer is what is required to test from external and I haven't found much else that can assist with that. There is very little else that will show you each step that is taken and what has passed and what has failed.

    Tuesday, September 11, 2018 2:45 PM
  • Guys,

I was having the issue as well on the Office 365 Free/Busy lookup, figuring I have nothing to lose, I verified on the Office 365 Domain DNS check.

That get's you good for 30 minutes, so you can go back to whatever test you want after that.

So, try to use a different test to verify (Again the first one in Office 365 test, domain DNS setup worked for me!)

Good luck! Update here if anyone else has success with this.

    Tuesday, October 9, 2018 2:35 PM
  • Just tried it. Down of course.

Microsoft should be straight up ashamed that they can't keep a simple Captcha running, when tens of thousands of rinky-dink sites on the internet appear able to do so on a daily basis with zero trouble. Pathetic.

  • Down for me - again.  Love the tool but hate that the captcha fails so frequently.  I even opened a Premier Support Case on it last time and was told they were escalating to the group managing that tool/website.  The engineer on the phone verified that it wasn't working for my IT team from any browser or external IP, however he claimed that it worked for him in India.  Wonder if they have a bad server in the GSLB pool and are using Geolocation to select it?

Anyway, never heard back from them.  Obviously it's not been resolved.

  • It was working earlier today, please fix the captcha issue!
    Monday, October 15, 2018 9:16 PM
  • This has broken again. Come on MS, pull your finger out. I've just implemented a new Autodiscover redirect website with new SSL certs and I can't test anything.

Can you not just release this as a .exe so I can run it from home? The click-once client just complains that it can't download the manifest.

Edit: So it turns out the click-once installer just doesn't like Chrome. Ran it from IE11 and it installed OK. I've managed to test Outlook connectivity and everything looks good. Lots of green ticks!

    Monday, December 10, 2018 6:13 PM
  • It's still down for me as it's been since last week and who knows for how long it will be down since there is no clear path to support for this tool.

I've found out that they are using DNS geo-location and some hosts work while others don't.
I used https://dnschecker.org/ to lookup the IPs for testconnectivity.microsoft.com and it came back with three different IPs:

    • 40.85.91.8
    • 13.67.59.89
    • 40.69.150.142

I've tried them one by one by putting them in my hosts file and it's only 40.85.91.8 that is having verification problems at the moment so put one of the others in your hostfile to get on with your work.

  • OMG 2 years later same problem
    Friday, December 14, 2018 7:47 PM
  • Hi Guys!

    HERE COMES THE SOLUTION:

If there is a wordwrap in the Capture Image, you have to input [ALT]+[ENTER] instead of a blank

    For Example:

    Capture looks like:

    --------------------------------------

    xywwj

    y6lwr

    --------------------------------------

    You have to put in:

    xywwj[ALT][ENTER]y6lwr

That always works (at least for me)
    --------------------------------------------------------------

Please be so kind and mark this as "ANSWER" (if that works for you too), so that other people can find it!
It costed me hours of typing in the capture - and as i checked out, that it only works, if it is in one line, everthing went clear... ;-)
    Thank you Guys

That is too many characters. Please try again.

    This is ridiculous

Use the "click on road signs" or something

yup, nothing like troubleshooting a troubleshooting tool !!!
    Friday, December 14, 2018 7:56 PM
  • Ok, this is totally crazy but it works for me, so I will share.  When you go to use this tool, validate the capcha first without inputing anything else?  I know it sounds nuts and makes no sense, but I got frustrated and entered the capcha with all the other fields blank (maybe you have to check that I understand that box nonsense) but that's it and it said You're Validated.  then you are good for 30 minutes

so then scroll up and enter your email address, credentials, pasword, etc. and run the tool

  • As Perhof and Brian Grimm indicates, it is for sure a matter of which IP-address you are getting resolved in DNS.
As of today, the IP 40.69.150.142 does NOT have working chaptcha, but 40.85.9.8 does..

So check which IP you have resolved for www.testconnectivity.microsoft.com, then add a hosts-entry for one of the others.

    Current IP's resolved for dns-name:
    40.69.150.142
    40.85.91.8
    13.67.59.89
