SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1 fails, not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component RRS feed

  • Question

  • In following the FAST setup instructions to configure SSL-enabled communications (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381261.aspx#BKMK_Configure_ssl_enabled_communication), the provided PowerShell script fails as follows:

    Command:
.\SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1 –certPath "FASTSearchCert.pfx" –ssaName "FAST_Content Search Service Application" –username “MyActualDomain\OSearch14Username

    Error:
New-SPEnterpriseSearchExtendedConnectorProperty : The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component '9c2504ce-6e75-43ce-b9a5-0da0312f6a37' in search application 'FAST_Content Search Service Application' is in a good state and try again.

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Cmdlet.NewExtendedConnectorProperty

Any advice on how to approach the investigation of this error?

FYI, I’ve un-installed/re-installed FAST with the same result.  After the first failure, I checked the Registry for the indicated component and that revealed that something is indeed wrong with this FAST search component in that there are errors opening the keys.  But this time around (i.e., '9c2504ce-6e75-43ce-b9a5-0da0312f6a37') this Registry issue is not evident and the key values in the “ResourceManager” folder can be viewed.

What further information would be useful in getting to the root cause of this error?

Finally, here's FAST status information (per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381272.aspx):

  • Hi gmj2,

Can you post Block of Intaller logs from the server where you failed to run PSCONFIG.ps1?

  • Hi Hiran --

I'm not quite sure exactly which block of installer logs you'd like to see, so I may be way off here ... if you could point me to the appropriate folder (I used the default install folders), I'll be happy to provide the information you requested.

In the meanwhile, I re-ran the PowerShell script this morning and copied a block of logging that was recorded to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS\MyServerName\DateStamp.txt showing some of the errors related to the administrative application ('9c2504ce-6e75-43ce-b9a5-0da0312f6a37'), but similar entries appear in the log files that were generated earlier (before I re-ran the PowerShell script) so I'm not sure how useful this information might be.

    Additional notes:

    • The service account for "SharePoint Server Search 14" is MyActualDomain\MySharePointFarmSetupAccount
    • The service account for "SharePoint 2010 Timer" and "SharePoint 2010 User Code Host" is MyActualDomain\MySharePointFarmAccount
    • The service account for various FAST components is MyActualDomain\SearchAdminUsername

    Thanks!

  • I was having the exact same issue (and watching this thread for a solution).  I just did two things, one of which resolved the error for me.  First I granted SA permissions on the SQL server for all of my sharepoint service accounts (for testing purposes).  Initially it looked like this didn't fix the error so I moved on.  I also added Telnet Client as a feature on the SP2010 server (to test connecctivity with telnet).  I was able to telnet to the FAST admin server on the correct port, and when I refreshed my CSA page in central admin, I was still getting the same error.  But when I came back from lunch, I'm no longer getting the error.  My guess is that (for me) it was permissions related on the SQL side, but I'll need to test to verify.

  • Hi Hiran —

Here are the three logfiles found in C:\FASTSearch\var\log\installer:

    ·         “ConfigureSharePointAuthorization_MYSERVERNAME_20100702-115249.log”

    ·         “Installer-cmdlet.log”

    ·         “psconfig_MYSERVERNAME_20100702-114700.log”  ß first & last “page” of the “122 page” file

I’ve replaced the strings associated with the actual machine name/domain, the SharePoint farm domain account, and the FAST search domain account with the text in green italics.

By the way, is there a way to upload these as attachments rather than in-line text … as you might have guessed, my session timed out before completing the processing of the 122 pages associated with the third logfile J  Let me know how I can extract the most relevant information for your review.

Let me know if I can provide anything else.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks bmdl ...

Your post prompted me to make sure that I had followed all the prerequisites for the key SharePoint domain accounts (per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662513.aspx ), specifically:

    Account

    Purpose

    Requirements

    Setup user account

The Setup user account is used to run the following:

    ·         Setup

    ·         SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard

    ·         Domain user account.

    ·         Member of the Administrators group on each server on which Setup is run.

    ·         SQL Server login on the computer that runs SQL Server.

    ·         Member of the following SQL Server security roles:

    ·         securityadmin fixed server role

    ·         dbcreator fixed server role

If you run Windows PowerShell cmdlets that affect a database, this account must be a member of the db_owner fixed database role for the database.

Server farm account or database access account

The server farm account is used to perform the following tasks:

    ·         Configure and manage the server farm.

    ·         Act as the application pool identity for the SharePoint Central Administration Web site.

    ·         Run the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service.

    ·         Domain user account.

Additional permissions are automatically granted for the server farm account on Web servers and application servers that are joined to a server farm.

The server farm account is automatically added as a SQL Server login on the computer that runs SQL Server. The account is added to the following SQL Server security roles:

    ·         dbcreator fixed server role

    ·         securityadmin fixed server role

    ·         db_owner fixed database role for all SharePoint databases in the server farm

I adjusted a couple parameters of setup account shown in red in the table above (i.e., added it to the local machine administrators group, gave it dbcreator and securityadmin SQL security roles, and made sure it had a database role membership of "db_owner" for the FAST_Content_Search_Service_Application_DB_?????? database).

Unfortunately, at least in my case, the error persists ... but I'll keep digging through the requirements to make sure that I did everything correctly.

    Thanks again for your post.

  • Hi gmj2,

If you browse to 'FAST_Content Search Service Application'  SSA in Central Admin and scroll to the bottom on Search Administration Page where you can see topology for Search Service Application what is status of Administration Component there?

  • Hi Hiran,

The topology section stays in "loading..." mode, presumably because of the error in the system status section (which mirrors the error at the beginning of this post):

  • Hi gmj2,

one more question did you Created this SSA using Powershell? If yes Can post the Commads you ran?

It looks like your Search ADMIN Component is either not Created or it is not responding. I will test few Powershell commands later today and send them to you to run on your environment.

  • Here are the Notes from my installation of FAST Search Server
(Note that actual service accounts, etc., modified to generic names and highlighted in red; also most of the screen shots deleted, but are available):

Install FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint

o    Click on “Install software prerequisites” and complete Wizard

o    Click on “Install FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint”
Accept default destination folder and select “Install”

o    Check Microsoft Update for updates (there was one, a security update for C++ that was a prerequisite for FAST).

o    Re-start server before configuring FAST Search Server (just to be safe)

o    In the SQL Server Management Studio, ADD the roles (i.e., public, sysadmin, dbcreator) for Active Directory Domain Search Service Account (which will be used by FAST to connect to the SQL database)

§  Note that per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381239.aspx#BKMK_Required_permissions, this account must have “dbcreator permissions in SQL Server for the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint administrative database”.

o    Run FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint Post-setup Configuration Wizard
    (note
: Must log in as domain user with administrative privileges—i.e., used Active Directory Domain account with local administrative privileges on the server)

    §  More detailed step-by-step instructions at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381243.aspx

§  Select “Single server (stand-alone)” deployment type

§   Enter user name/password (“Active Directory Domain Search Service Account”; note that must be domain account)

§  Enter “certificate password” for secure communications between servers (used “ENTER PASSPHRASE HERE”, this will be used to encrypt the .pfx certificate file created as part of the configuration).

§  Enter “ENTER FULLY QUALIFIED NAME AS IT APPEARS IN Active Directory” (note that a CNAME will not work) as the fully qualified name of the server and accept default base port number (i.e., “13000”)

§  Enter “SERVER NAME” as database connection string and accept default for database name and port (i.e., “1433”)
Important Note:  This step will fail unless “
Active Directory Domain Search Service Account” (or whatever username was specified earlier) is added to the SQL logins (with appropriate roles).

§  Enter user name running the “SharePoint Timer Server” per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381243.aspx (verify by looking up “SharePoint 2010 Timer” in the Control Panel/Services app)

§  Review summary and select “Configure”
    Note:
Need to research the appropriate separation of domain accounts for all these services … but this seems logical as an initial small-scale deployment!

§  Restart once the Wizard completes

Add FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint as back-end for SharePoint Server (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff404323.aspx)—i.e., after you have installed Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint and done the initial configuration, you must add it as a back-end for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Do the following:

    o    On SharePoint Server 2010:

§   Create and set up the Content Search Service Application (Content SSA) for your FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.  (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381261.aspx)
Register Active Directory Domain Search Service Account account.
Create New Search Service Application (get specifics from C:\FASTSearch\install_info.txt):
    Click OK:

§   Enable Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for the Content SSA before it can be used. See Configure SSL enabled communication for detailed information.   (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff381261.aspx#BKMK_Configure_ssl_enabled_communication)

    ·          Verify the account running “SharePoint Sever Search 14 (OSearch14)” via Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Services [it is Active Directory Domain Account running OSearch14]

    ·          Used the following command:

.\SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1 –certPath "FASTSearchCert.pfx" –ssaName "FAST_Content Search Service Application" –username “Active Directory Domain Account running OSearch14

UNRESOLVED ERROR CONDITION (see text below from SharePoint 2010 Management Shell):

    PS C:\MyActualPath> .\SecureFASTSearchConnector.ps1 -certPath "FASTSearchCert.pf

" -ssaName "FAST_Content Search Service Application" -username Active Directory Domain Account running OSearch14"

    Enter the certificate password: ******************************************

    Installed certificate.

Updated acls on certificates private keys.

Could not secure SSA. Script can be rerun to only configure SSA when reason for

    error is detected.

    NOT YET COMPLETED:

§   Create and set up the Query Search Service Application (Query SSA).

§   The Query SSA will provide query results from the content that is crawled by the Content SSA.

o    On the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint server, you must enable queries from Microsoft SharePoint Server. This includes the following:

§   Select a communication channel to import the certificate that was exported from SharePoint Server 2010. See Configure claims authentication (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint) for instructions.

§   Optional: If you decide to use HTTPS for queries, see Enable HTTPS (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint).

If you Browse Search Administrator Page on Content SSA what do you see under Search Topology.

  • Hi Hiran -

Here's what "Central Administration à Search Service Application: Search Administration" shows (with actual server name substituted).  If I select the "Fast_Content Search Service Application" topology, I get the results in my Sunday, July 18, 2010 11:08 PM post (i.e., there is an error in the crawl status and the topology doesn't get past the "loading" stage).

  • Hi Gmj2,

I would recommend you to Delete you current Fast Content SSA and Create new Content SSA as it seems that when you created your Content SSA it had some failure in internal processing. Fastest way should be to try creating new SSA and see if we get topology to showup properly as your other SSA.

Unless Content SSA is in healthy state powershell commands will fail.

  • Hi All,

Above is not clear. Was the problem solved?

    Wednesday, July 28, 2010 6:46 AM
  • Hi, I have the same issue with identical conditions. I realized that the osearch14 service was running with my sharepoint application services account (that is the services account I used in the sp farm configuration wizard) The Search services account of my Fast SSA Content is a different one. After changing the logon account for the osearch14 service with my Fast service account the issue was solved.

    regards

  • LaraB,

Did you try to add the previous osearch14 account to the FASTSearchAdmin group on the FAST server instead of changing the login?

  • Hi there,

I've gotten into the same issue and read through this page. It did call my attention the tips on security. So I went back in SQL Managment Studio and gave SysAdmin server role to the accounts FAST is using and rebooted the server.

It worked. Now I have it up and running and the SSL certificate applied.

    Good luck!

  • I had this problem too. I followed hsalvi's advise and recreated the SSA. Everything worked. I suspect it was due to me registering a new managed service account part way through the process of setting up the SSA
