Design question - DPM and Disk storage RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

we are planning to buy new storage for our 15 DPM servers. Because of that I have some questions regarding the disk profile:

    1. Read / Write - Storage profile
What does DPM use more - read or write / sequential or random?
Perhaps there is a recommendation for a IOMeter Profile?

    2. RAID Level
    I know this:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399569.aspx (so MS recommends RAID5)
but we have to backup more than 25 servers per site with quite big fileserves.
Does anyone really know I f we would have an advantage when using RAID50 because of better write performance?

    3. cluster / block size
What is the the default block size DPM uses?

    Thanks in advance
    regards

Answers

  • Hi,

    I answer it myself:

    1. Read and write usually a bit more reads
RP cause reads and writes, sync jobs more reads

DPM uses sequential read & writes while doing IO on DPM storage pool
    volumes

    2. I did some testing but differences were not that big

    3. DPM uses 4kb cluster size when formatting storage pool volumes
